The Story

Indianapolis, 1977. Tony Kiritsis, a real estate developer convinced his lender has conspired to ruin him, walks into the Meridian Mortgage Company and wires a sawed-off shotgun to the head of its president, with the other end of the wire fastened to himself. His demands: five million dollars, immunity, and a personal apology.

Over three days, broadcast live across the airwaves, an act of desperation curdles into an unlikely folk legend. Gus Van Sant's thriller traces the strange American collision of grievance, media, and myth-making, told with the director's signature sympathy for the outsider.

"A lively ensemble, full of little creative swings and pulpy energy."

The Film Stage · Venice 2025

The film received an extended standing ovation at its Venice world premiere, where Van Sant was honored with the Campari Passion for Film Award.
